THE
MODERN
REPORT
BY TODD D. REEVES, Isidro Dunbar Modern Interiors
Fresh from the furniture market in High Point, NC, I was grateful to
attend Vladimir Kagan’s 80th birthday party at American Leather, co-sponsored with Metropolitan Home Magazine,
hung out with Alexander Julian, saw HGTV’s Candice Olson…and
that was just a few of the big name designers that were there!
While at Market, I looked at thousands of sofas, hundreds of
chairs, tables, lamps and accessories. I walked the halls and the multiple buildings, looking for the new, the different, and the creative…
simply trying to discern the next big trend, realizing that I had already
bought it for our store…and it is already here!
Gone are the days when modern had to take a back seat. Modern
is now the fashion-forward style, and it is what is hot in the Market.
No more fluff—no more “fru fru.” Modern is all about keeping life
simple, and making your life easier. Today’s modern is not that old
black lacquered look with the cheesy gold accents. It is sophisticated.
And, don’t forget comfort—good modern is always comfortable.
That’s why modern was generating all the buzz at Market, and people
wanted more. Even the traditional vendors are moving toward the
modern look and working in black and white. (See sidebar for more
hot colors).
The styles: modern, classic—square arms, some gentle curves,
sophisticated tailoring, clean lines, crisp i.e. the classic Eames chair,
Barcelona chair, or Corbusier recliner. Go for space-appropriate pieces,
