Summer in Destin—that exciting time of year when millions from across the globe travel to
visit our area for some well-deserved recreation or much-needed relaxation. It is always heart-
warming to receive the numerous e-mails, phone calls and letters from readers who sing the
praises of our little slice of paradise. Each one has a unique perspective or story on why their time
spent in our area is precious to them.
Destin, of course, is special to me in more ways than I could write in this space. At the top of
my list would be that I am particularly proud to be a part of a community that continually asks
for God’s blessings upon its fishing fleet and its crews, the original backbone of Destin’s economy.
The 51-year tradition was celebrated recently during Destin’s Annual Week of Blessings that also
included specific days reserved for prayer and fasting, as well as events for families and businesses.
Considering today’s national headlines, it seems that many have forgotten, or have simply lost
respect for, what is truly important in life. I am thankful to live where there are leaders and citizens
who ensure that our city not only remembers where it came from, but knows where it is going. If
