CATTLE
BARONS’
BALL
36 years of history
in the making
Since the AmericAn cAncer
Society’S original launch of
the cattle Barons’ Ball in texas in
the 1970’s, the Ball is now held
in many cities throughout the
country. the event has proudly
raised many millions of dollars,
which help support research
grants, educational programs for
prevention and early detection,
and direct services to cancer
patients and their families. to
date, the American cancer Society
has invested nearly $3.2 billion
in cancer research, more than
any other non-governmental
organization in the U.S., and
has funded 43 nobel Laureate
recipients.
CanCer, the not-so-silent
epidemiC — Whether it’s yourself,
a parent, sibling, child or family
friend, virtually everyone has had
their lives touched by cancer in
some way.
According to the American
cancer Society, it is estimated that
more than 1.4 million Americans
are expected to be diagnosed with
cancer in 2009, with 562,340 dying
from the disease, which translates
to 1,500 people per day losing
their lives to cancer. Although
nationally, the cancer death rate
has slowly declined, cancer still
accounts for one of every four
deaths. the state of Florida is
second in the nation for cancer
cases, only behind california.
though many strides have been
made, there are still far too many
people whose prognosis is bleak
and they do not join the ranks of
cancer survivors. the community
can do their part to help by
attending the 3rd Annual cattle
Barons’ Ball at Destin commons
on march 13. We can only make a
difference through your generous
donations which, in turn, funds
the necessary cancer research and
programs that touch the lives of
people in our very own community.
