V ALENTINE ’ S D AY IS THE ONE D AY out of the year — February 14th — when we get to show those we
care about the most, just how much they mean to
us. Whether it is a spouse, a girlfriend or boyfriend,
or even a secret love, it is a day that holds affection,
promise and renewal.
While florists are arranging bouquets, chocolate
makers are operating in overdrive and balloon makers
see sales soar. After only Christmas, Valentine’s Day is
the second largest gift-giving holiday. No wonder it is
the perfect occasion for romance and entertainment.
The history of Valentine’s Day is actually a bit of a
mystery, but there are a few facts and myths that have
been handed down over the years. For starters, Saint
Valentine has always been associated with the holiday.
So, who exactly was this saint? Let the mystery begin.
The Catholic Church currently recognizes at least
three different saints with the name Valentine, one of
whom was actually buried after his death on February
14th. Stories suggest Valentine was put to death for
performing marriages after marriage was outlawed
for young men by Emperor Claudius. Some say he
was responsible for sending the first valentine himself
when he sent a note to a girl with whom he had fallen
in love and signed it “from your valentine”. Yet, others
say he was killed for helping Christians escape from
Roman prisons.
Why do we celebrate it on February 14th? One
theory is that Valentine’s Day was manufactured in
order to displace the pagan holiday of Lupercalia.
Regardless of what you elect to believe, we do know
this: February 14th has become a day for celebrating
your love for friends and family, and Destin has much
to offer in ways of celebrating and entertaining your
loved ones on this special day.
Start with breakfast in bed. Cook your sweetie
his or her favorite breakfast and serve it stylishly. This
will give you quality time together and a few special
moments to share before the hustle and bustle of the
day begins. Don’t forget the mimosas!
Set a time for mutual massages. Nothing says, “I
love you” like a massage from your spouse or significant
other. Set up a spa date at Serenity by the sea spa and
ask for the couple’s massage. This is the perfect idea for
relaxation and appreciation for one another. Or, you can
choose to give each other the massage!
Have a picnic and camp beneath the stars.
Why not pack a dinner that you both love and plan for
a late picnic under the stars? Bring the good champagne
and stemware and wish on a star. Stay overnight at one
of the many beautiful state parks in our region. You can
either choose an intimate tent setting, or rent a cabin in
the beautiful outdoors.
Go on a romantic sunset cruise. Charter a boat
from one of the various companies in Destin Harbor,
such as Mercury Yacht Charters, or rent one yourself
and take a romantic cruise through the beautiful
emerald green waters. Plan on a few dolphin sightings
during your trip.
Go for a walk on the beach. Where you go isn’t
important, just hold hands and really enjoy being in
each other’s company. Studies show that couples that
hold hands have more intimate relationships with their
partners. If you are feeling a little adventurous, fly a kite
together during your stroll. The teamwork will bring
you closer.
Have a romantic dinner out…or at home. Let’s
face it — it really doesn’t matter where you are, as
long as you are together. The choice is completely up
to you. Sip on wine and eat the finest fare at Seagar’s
or Fleming’s. Order in, or simply make dinner, and eat
over candlelight at home.
Don’t forget the chocolate. After all, it is
Valentine’s Day. Stop in at Godiva, in Destin
Commons, and purchase the perfect 36-piece
Chocolatier box.
Regardless of how you decide to entertain your
loved one this year, you don’t have to create the
traditional Valentine’s Day to express your love for
each other. Just being with the one that you love is
the most important gift of all. b
